Baywatch Ben: The Benjamin Franklins You Never Knew

Who Are We
Franklin-HERO.jpg

About the class:

Dr. Michael Lofaro will lead a discussion on the famous Benjamin Franklin.

"The dominant popular image of Franklin—a dowdy old man in granny glasses flying a kite—isn’t at all correct.  The young Franklin had a vigorous, adventurous life before later moving into and mastering literature, science, and politics, all with a wicked and sometimes self-deprecating sense of humor that he often used to manipulate his readers.  These elements of his careers reveal a much more complete picture of the man, who the French called a “philosophe”—a universal genius—and who they ranked with Voltaire and Rousseau as a major figure in the Enlightenment."

-Michael A. Lofaro, Professor Emeritus at the University of Tennessee, is the author or editor of twenty-two books, an online database, over eighty articles, and as well has received over sixty fellowships, grants, and awards.
